Posting about the weekend to follow later. Or tomorrow. At the moment, this is just a quick FYI:

Of late, I have found my f-list too cumbersome to follow regularly. This results in many things being skipped or missed. Not good. To make following more manageable, I have now performed my annual[*] ritual -- The Culling Of The F-list. As always, I have based this on (a) how frequently others post (i.e., how much of an investment of my time it takes to read their journal), and (b) how frequently they reply to my entries or comments (i.e., how much time they have chosen to invest in me).

Please be assured that I am not making a statement about anyone by removing them from my f-list. I strongly dislike the terms "friend list" and "defriending" and whatnot -- it sounds so personal! This is just simple mathematics; there is not enough time in the day to read everything... so I have to choose to interact most with those who are interacting with me.

Thank you very much. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Sunday Evening...

[*] I use the term "annual" loosely; the previous culling was about fourteen months ago.

Hm. I wonder if i should start engaging in this practice, or at list bother to do it once.

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

I do find that it helps. To be fair, lately I've not been nearly as interactive with others as I would like. I'm hoping that this f-list cull will help me get on with that. After all, the main reason that I keep a LiveJournal is to stay in touch with my friends, who span many thousands of miles!

I may post totally erratically, but I read regularly! There are lots of advantages to being a speed reader. *g*

And I do mean to post more often, but you know how that goes!

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

I do indeed, hon! And don't worry in the slightest -- you have very much, as they say, made the cut!

From: [identity profile] theentwife.livejournal.com

I'm still here, even though I haven't felt like posting anything in a while to LiveJournal. (I'm more into Twitter at the moment -- if you have a Twitter account, feel free to send me a follow request.)

Alas, sweetie, I cannot bring myself to enter the world of Twitter. The idea of communicating in 140 character bursts mades me shudder! ;-D

Nonetheless, I know that you are still here... and I am quite glad of it! It would suck if I only got to interact with you in person, once or twice per year!

If you are willing to engage with Google (corporate motto: don't be evil!), there's Google Buzz. It's sort of somewhere in between Twitter (in that it's real-time, automatically distributed to follower's Buzz pages, etc) and LJ (in that there is no 140-character limit, you can post pictures, etc).

The 140char limit in Twitter is a hold-over from when Twitter was mainly SMS-based, which used a normally-unused channel capable of sending 140characters.

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Oh -- interesting! I had always wondered where that 140 character limit came from, given that a typical SMS has a 160 character limit!

*grins* Leave it to you to know such things, old friend!

From: [identity profile] theentwife.livejournal.com

It's easier than one might think to micro-blog in 140 characters. I just make another tweet if what I have to say takes more than that. I like it since I can tweet while away from my computer, via my cell phone. (That's also why my account is protected, so the whole world doesn't know I'm away from home, including any potential burglars.)

I do use chat programs, you know, if you feel like having a conversation when online. And Skype, if you want to use voice rather than typing to communicate with me.

Have you ever read anything by the communications theorist Marshall McLuhan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_McLuhan)? His best known book, The Medium is the Message makes an excellent case for how communication is shaped by the form used to transmit it.

I tend to agree, at least broadly speaking, with Dr. McLuhan's conclusions... and I am not particularly ready to embrace a form that requires me to squeeze my messages down to 140 character bursts.

On the other hand, my dear Persephone, I would be delighted to talk to you online sometime, via MSN or AIM. As far as voice goes? Well, we can use a regular phone line! My home phone plan allows me to call the States for free for up to one hour per call! Pretty spiffy, huh? *grin* And, yes, chatting with you more often would be quite lovely, hon!

From: [identity profile] theentwife.livejournal.com

Let me know what your MSN and AIM are via email & when you are likely to be online. You know my email address, which is the same as my AIM. You can also reach me through YahooIM, which is listed on my LJ profile page. You should notice the pattern to my usernames on these services. ;)

I use Trillian to connect to all my IM services with just one client open -- if you haven't tried it already, I recommend it highly.

It would be nice to chat with you, either via IM or phone. :)

That sounds like a good plan! I will send an e-mail in your direction, my dear!

P.S. I, too, am a convert to the ways of Trillian! It is highly convenient to have both of the IM services that I use -- AIM and MSN -- running through the same program!

P.P.S. Hope to chat with you soon!! *smile*

Does this mean that I should be wishing you a Happy Friday right about now? Or perhaps just a Joyous October? Maybe a Fantastic Summer??

Either way, I hope to see you at Oxford BiFest next week... whenever next week happens to be! ;-D

Hope your list is easier to manage now! I tend to just move people off my default filter, so that they can still read my protected entries without me having to have them on my friends page if they post a lot that I have to skip :-) I know that some people (like me) don't tend to comment a lot so I feel mean removing them unless there is a good reason!

Do you think you could return me to Friday evening instead, pretty please? *flutters eyelashes* I'd quite like my weekend over again :-)

xxx

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

*nods* What you say about the default filter makes a lot of sense. I tend not to bother with it much myself, though, as my journal is almost entirely public and, as such, no one needs my permission to wander through my crazed ramblings writings!

Do you think you could return me to Friday evening instead, pretty please? *flutters eyelashes*

*melts*

As you wish, Sweetie! I can't say "no" to those fluttering eyelashes!

*polishes up the time machine and sends you back*

(The weekend was that good, was it? *grin* Next weekend should be pretty spectacular, too!)

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Received and replied to, as you know by now, m'dear! *smile*

Have also received your reply to my reply... but am holding off on writing back until I've nailed down the logistics a little better. As yet, I'm not sure what time I need to be at the BiFest venue to help with the setup on Saturday. Will get back to you shortly.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon, hon! *grins*

No worries, luv. I do the same thing with my own um, prodigious flist. Sadly, you and I don't interact as often as I would wish (oh, to live in Oxford. I would totally give up my treehouse with wifi). But I do hope you'll pop in every so often and say hello. Especially since J and I are still hoping to see you guys this summer sometime...;-)

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Trust me when I say that you, my dear, have most definitely made the LJ cut! *grin*

The main reason that I keep a LiveJournal is to facilitate staying in touch with friends who are spread far and wide, geographically speaking. I'm sure you have some idea what I'm talking about here, yes? ;-D More than the actual journaling, the interactions are what is important. Which is why, when I realize I've not been interacting as often as I would like, the f-list needs to shrink a bit. To free up time for that vital interaction, particularly with lovely people who are far away!

Seeing as you most definitely fit the bill of "lovely people who are far away", hon, you may expect to see a bit more of me popping on over to your page now! *grins*

Also, we would love to have you living in Oxford... or even popping over for Oxford BiFest! Since I've yet to work the last kinks out of the teleporter, I guess it will have to wait until Summer. At this point, I'm pretty certain to be heading to Brushwood's SummerFest at the end of July -- any chance you (and maybe J) could join in? If not, let me know and I will try to squeeze a side trip down to State College into the travel plans!

*hugs and squishes you*

Yay for continued flisting!

Not sure what our summer will hold; J won't know his schedule 'til nearer the time. It may end up that I go to Brushwood without him, though I'd really hate to.

Do keep us all posted on your plans; you guys are more than welcome here anytime (and we actually now have a queen-sized futon for visitors!)

xx

I understand entirely- I really must have a spring clean of my flist at some point soon.

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

I suspect many of us on here know this feeling all too well!

Now that my f-list is a little trimmer, I hope to have more time to respond to others more! With any luck, that will allow me to make the cut by the time you do your own trimming! :-D

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Happy (belated) birthday!

Thank you, kind sir! If memory serves, you have one of those birthday thingies coming up, too!

You are going to be... twenty-three? Twenty-four? Remind me, please. I want to say that I met you in December 2003 when you were seventeen... which would make you twenty-three now. Is that correct?

P.S. I had another baby.

Congratulations! It must have been hard work for you -- I hope that KT was supportive! ;-D

How is T doing? How old is she now? Three? Four? I lose track, being so far away.

For that matter, how are you and KT doing? Since your last journal update was in 2008, when Studs Terkel bought the farm, I really don't know what y'all are up to since I last saw you, back in July. I should be around for an extra week this Summer... so I would very much like to get together for a bit, if y'all can make it!

*big hugs*

Solidarity forever, my friend!

From: [identity profile] robertrabbits.livejournal.com

Yup, 23 next week. Gosh, I can't remember when we met, but I do remember where. Ah, the ol' Behavioral Sciences Building.

T just turned three last month. She's doing alright, more or less. She's adjusting to the new baby, so that's a little rough, y'know?

Kit and I are plowing along. Quite tired most of the time, though, as expected.

Let me know whenever you're headed back here. I don't know if we'll be able to make it to your party, but we'd certainly like to try!
