Much of yesterday was spent celebrating the birth of my darling [livejournal.com profile] miss_amaranth. As she likes to continually mention: "I'm twenty-three. I'm old now." When she does this, I generally threaten to break up with her in order to find a new nineteen year old. Seems the only appropriate reply to claiming that twenty-three is old.

The day was full of celebrations around Oxford. We started in the afternoon at The Rose, home to the best cream teas in Oxford. It was all very casual and unstructured, with people coming and going from the party as we sat around chatting. Indeed, after my own tea and scones were finished, I had to duck out for a few hours, missing the second stop -- Far From The Madding Crowd. In the evening, I collected my beloved [livejournal.com profile] cheshcat, and we rejoined the group for dinner at the Japanese(ish) chain, Wagamama. I don't usually get to enjoy vegetarian gyoza, so that was a nice treat. Then we finished the night off with ice cream (and presents!) at the best dessert parlour in Oxford[*] -- Indulge. Finally, at the end of the night, I went back to the House of the Rising Bun with the birthday girl for some quality alone time.

Due to the unstructured nature of the festivities, we don't have a tally of how many people actually came along. [livejournal.com profile] miss_amaranth felt no need to count... and the Knave of Numbers (me) was not there for the whole time. Still, I estimate that twenty-something people showed up -- from as far away as London and Reading -- to celebrate. Huzzah!

Hard to believe that so much time has passed. When I first met [livejournal.com profile] miss_amaranth, she was barely nineteen and just about to start university. Now she's twenty-three and in her second job post-graduation. Not quite sure where the past four years went -- maybe it's hiding under the sofa?

In any case, I don't have a picture from yesterday's party, so I shall re-use this older photo, taken at Oxford's Harcourt Arboretum two years ago:

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart! I know that twenty-two ended on a high note, with many wonderful things falling into place for you right now. May twenty-three be even more spectacular! I look forward to sharing it with you!

[*] As a side note, I particularly like the fact that all of the chosen venues of celebration were local Oxford businesses, save one. Wagamama was the only chain. I may have an Oxford party at some point that follows much of the same itinerary, except perhaps substituting Atomic Burger for Wagamama. And maybe have The Eagle and Child as my choice of pub, instead of Far From The Madding Crowd.

Hippo Birdies Two Ewe (er, her)!

I tend to associate pubs with alcohol consumption and bad fried foods (this being the States, after all), so I'm uncertain what sort of vegetarian fare would be available at the Eagle and Child or Far from the Maddening Crowd. How do pubs rate for non-drinkers in the UK?

(I have heard of a "traditional English pub" in Rochester which looked like it had a good menu full of curries and other safe for vegetarian fare, but I haven't tried it out yet. I also want to try the Wagamama in Boston sometime, but haven't been back since i found out about it).

Oh, I found this morning a photo of you at RBDarkly's one long-past Beltaine. It's on paper and everything. It's not the best photo (you are looking away from the camera, but I'd recognize the hair...), but should I scan it in and post it?

Honestly, the quality of pub food varies considerably. There are definitely the "bad fried foods" variety. On the other hand, The Trout (http://www.thetroutoxford.co.uk/), in Northern Oxford, or The Black Boy (http://www.theblackboy.uk.com/), here in Headington, serve excellent fare.

At the Eagle & Child, I usually get the vegetarian bangers & mash. Quite tasty! However, for vegetarian fare, the best pub in town is unequivocally The Gardener's Arms (http://theveggieblog.co.uk/2012/07/22/the-gardeners-arms-oxford-the-garden-kitchen/), in Jericho. It's a vegetarian pub, so I have a hard time selecting what I want, knowing I can eat anything on the menu!

Also, unrelated, I would love to see the picture from Beltane Past. By all means, please do scan and send when you have a chance! Thanks!

Sounds like a wonderful celebration!

I checked out the online menus and now I'm missing Great Britain something fierce.

Any chance we can bunk with you guys when we hop the Pond?

Re: Sounds like a wonderful celebration!

It was a lot of fun -- thank you!

And, yes, you should definitely pop on over to this side of the Pond... and you should definitely bunk with us when you're here! I'll give you my semi-famous impersonation of a tour guide. I'm told that I do a rather convincing job of it! ;-D

We've had a couple of people from P**T*** stay with us over the years. Most recent was EB, our esteemed Presidente and 2013 organiser, who came here last year. Took him around Oxford, bringing him to all our favourite restaurants, of course! Also did a weekend road trip to York, which is a phenomenal city.

So, yes, please to be coming for a visit! Am getting excited at the thought! *bounces happily*

All trips must wait until actual job is obtained, but I will put it on the books.

Speaking of PT, you still haven't responded to my PM. I have procured the funds, but we need to discuss the plans.

Re: Sounds like a wonderful celebration!

Ack! You are quite correct -- I do owe you a reply! A thousand pardons -- I'm afraid I've become rather backlogged with e-mail!

Will try to respond today or tomorrow, so we can get the ball rolling for our P**T*** plans. Also, I will be in Japan next month, with a fair bit of free time on my hands from the 8th to 14th. Mayhap we could arrange a Skype call whilst I'm there to discuss both these plans and also answer some of your Japan questions? It would be a particularly good time, as I could do hands-on research for some of the questions that I might not have an immediate answer for. What do you think?

Re: Sounds like a wonderful celebration!

That sounds excellent. We shall see what my schedule will look like, as I expect another round of Data Monkey to start either the second or third week of July. Then again, with the time zones being what they are, we might be able to finagle something in the off hours.

I love you.

This is really sweet, thank you, Love!

Also, if you don't mind me saying so, this picture makes me realise how different you look now from two years ago. (Gorgeous as ever, though, of course! *smile.*)

Aw, I love you, too! *kiss* Very glad that you liked the little birthday entry that I made for you.

(Hope you liked the special weather that I ordered, too. It's been rubbish out there ever since your birthday ended!)

Also, I don't mind you saying so at all. I was thinking the same thing when I posted that picture. I mean, it's only a head shot and all... but, wowza, what a difference! Especially in the neck! Glad you love me either way, my darling... but I definitely prefer how I am now!

Have a wonderful morning, m'dear... and I shall see you (and Sir Patrick) at five this afternoon.

*blows you a cross-town kiss*

Thanks! It was a lot of fun! Yay!

(And wait until you hear about the spiffy new place that is opening in Oxford. Read more about it in my next LJ entry -- stay tuned! *grin*)

That sounds like a most excellent day! And all those places look so good. I really must go to Oxford more often!

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Why, yes! Yes, you should!

Just let me know when you would like to drop in for a visit, hon. It's been far too long since we've seen you!

*hugs*
