Another collaboration meeting over. I am writing this entry whilst sitting in Haneda Airport and waiting for my flight from Tokyo to Beijing.

Beijing is just a stopover on my way back to Sunny Olde England. After a short stay at home in Sheffield, my beloved [livejournal.com profile] cheshcat and I will be off to New York for the Sooper Sekrit Pagan Gathering... and then I will be on to Chicago for another meeting at Fermilab.

Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom all in the same week. (Plus a cameo in China.) I'm starting to get déjà vu here... because it all sounds a lot like this entry!

It has been two thousand four hundred fifty-six year -- nearly seven years -- but compare for yourself how similar things can be. Many things have changed... but I guess others stay the same.

Back then, I shared a photograph of the contents of my wallet. Six bills (or notes) -- none of which were the same -- representing the "coin of the realm" for three different countries. This time, my wallet had only five notes (or bills)... but, again, none were the same and the represented currency from three different countries.

Take a look for yourself:

Time to go through security and get ready to board. If any P**T***ns are reading this, I can't wait to see you next weekend!!!

ETA: By the way, that is indeed the brand new plastic five pound note that debuted less than three weeks ago. If you caught it, kudos for the sharp eyes!

Ooh! There you are!

We've moved since you were last around- now living in Shropshire so not so far beneath you two!

I haven't been given one of the plastic fivers yet!

They are pretty nifty! I'm sure the novelty will fade in time, but for now I'm enjoying playing with mine. :-D

You will certainly receive one soon; they are decommissioning the current series very quickly! On 5th May, the Elizabeth Fry fiver will no longer be legal tender. (Seven months! It usually takes them four years.)

I am also looking forward to the new £10 note next year, featuring Jane Austen. That said, I'm a little put off by their chosen quote about the joys of reading... given that the Miss Bingley was lying through her teeth when she said it. Meh.

I like the fact that the plastic Turner £20 will debut in 2020. Nice!

It sounds like there are no plans to replace the £50 note. Truth be told, I wouldn't mind doing away with it altogether. No one really uses them... and, in the rare instance where you have one, everybody hates you when you try to spend it.

Yeah, to be honest, I prefer her to Churchill.

Turner will be a nice change from Adam Smith, though!

(I'm about even on the Darwin -> Austen change. I admire them both greatly in very different ways.)

They don't like losing Darwin here- he was a Shrewsbury lad, after all!

So they make the old bills unusuable? That's interesting. In the US, I'm pretty sure basically any printed money continues to be legal tender; even stuff that's old and rare enough to be worth much more as collectors' items.

From: [identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com

Yup! They usually run the two versions concurrently for about four years, as they gradually withdraw the old notes from circulation. Then they publicly announce the final date where the old notes will be legal tender.

For the new polymer £5 note, it has already been announced that the old note will cease to be legal tender on May 5th next year. Which is pretty quick, considering that the new note was just released on September 13th.

That's fine, though. Old notes can still be exchanged for current versions through the Bank of England.

To be honest, I think this way of doing things makes more sense. You are correct that printed money in the USA always remains legal tender. However, doesn't that defeat the point of introducing newer notes with high-tech features to discourage counterfeiting? If I were a counterfeiter, I would just keep on churning out the old versions!

We're also getting a new pound coin in the UK next year, as the current one (from 1983) is apparently hugely counterfeited -- about 1% of coins are supposed to be fake.

Thanks, hon!

There is a certain irony in the fact that I'm writing this reply from ~37,000 feet whilst moving at about 500 miles per hour. Wouldn't you agree?

I hope you and D are doing well, sweetie, and looking forward to seeing you in December!!

We are doing well. Thinking of you right now, actually, since I'm preparing to go discuss the General and Special theories of relativity with my class in about 30 minutes.

I know you've been very, very busy, but I've missed your LJ presence. No matter, though - I'll see you in less than five days! :-D

Glad to see that becoming a Professor has not stopped your "Nomadic" lifestyle. Safe journeyings and have a great time next weekend at the you-know-what gathering.
We really must arrange to meet up again sometime soon. Ridiiculous that now we are nearer we still can't find the time. Hugs.

*grin* It comes and goes. During term time, it can be much more difficult to get away, due to teaching. But, yes, I still manage to get around.

Just heading back from a week in China followed by a week in Japan. I will be home for under 24 hours before heading to the States for a fortnight. When I get back from that, I have five days at home and then I'm off to Amsterdam for a couple of days. Nominally to give a seminar, but since I talk on a Monday, I will go out for the weekend and do a bit of sightseeing, also.

However, once that is done, I have no international travel planned for the rest of the year. Something may come up -- it's been known to happen -- but I may be staying put for nearly three months (until a mid-January meeting in Bern).

Glad to hear you are doing well! Once we've got the house set up properly, we will have to have you over!

Safe travels! I'd love to see you while you're in the Chicago area.

That would be great! I think this trip is pretty full up (and quick), but let's definitely get together next time. I miss you!
