Your friendly neighbourhood Nomad has a veritable backlog of LJ entries waiting to be written. However, I just received some Nifty NewsTM that had to be pushed to the front of the queue!

Following on from my previous entry, there is yet another reason to love Oxford. Today, I learned that the City of Dreaming Spires will soon be getting its very first board game café!

That's right, gentle readers. As if my fair city were not spiffy enough as is, next month will see the opening of the Thirsty Meeples Board Game Café. See? Tis indeed pretty nifty, yes?[*]

Perusing their website, I definitely like what I see so far. They will be located right in the city centre; they will be open until midnight seven days a week, opening at 11:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on weekends; they have over 1500 games in their library that will be available to play in the café (with 400 different games available for purchase); and they will serve smoothies, coffee, and snacks. Sounds rather awesometacular to me!

Opening day is July 20th. I will definitely have to organise a band of friends to check it out then, or soon after. Seems like a most pleasant way to spend an evening (or afternoon... or morning...).

Methinks I may soon have another place to add to my list of "favourite food spots" in Oxford!

[*] For those of you not familiar with the concept, a "meeple" is one of the small wooden playing pieces from the the Carcassonne board game. They look like this.

You're right, that sounds supremely spiffy! I'd be all over that!

I have a feeling it may become a regular haunt. Cover charge is £3.50 per person, with no time limit on tables. Access to hundreds of new games without needing to buy the game first, in order to try it. And no need to gather snacks for a gaming party, as drinks and vittles will be available. Sounds good to me! :-D

If you ever pop back across the pond, I'll be happy to bring you!

Oh brilliant! No hope that somewhere like that will spring up in my neck of the woods, but it sounds like a brilliant place to go for a day out.(or any other slab of time)We shall have to find out if it's going to be part of a national chain or just a strictly Oxford privilege like your lovely diner.

Probably not... but unlike the other commenters in this entry, you live close enough that you get to visit several times each year. Next time you're down, which I believe will be the 3rd of August, we should take you there!

(Actually, that may well be only our second time dropping in on the Thirty Meeples. They open on 20th July, and we are currently trying to organise our first evening there on 28th July.)

Indeed I am lucky in that respect. However I shall not be able to make that weekend in August after all. Unfortunately the visit by Seniorsis and the Hublet will clash and although we have tried very hard to shift their visit, we cant find another time that fits in with their commitments and also allows them to ring at my local towers as well. (the trouble with democratic decisions is that the minority loses - and on this occasion I was that minority!)However, rest assured that I will be down your way as soon as we can fit in a visit, either for ritual or for socializing (or both).

The Thirsty Meeple sounds amazing. I would love to get something like that over here. Until then, I'll just have to keep hosting board game parties.

Well, if you're ever in the UK on business, my friend..... ;-D

(Until then, I agree that board game parties are the way to go. We have them fairly regularly with our transhumanist friends working over at Oxford Uni. Which board games do you like to play?)
