I am writing this entry whilst on the coach from Oxford to Heathrow. I am about to embark on a trip to Japan, returning to Merry Olde England on Friday May 14th.

"Why is this bad?" you may fairly ask, gentle readers. And, indeed, your Friendly Neighbourhood Nomad shall answer!

Tis bad because I should have been en route to Japan ten days ago, instead of now. Silly me, I forgot to include the Hidden Icelandic Volcano Effect (HIVE) in my calculations when planning out my trip! Bad Nomad -- no airplane for you!

I cannot complain too much; I do understand full well that many people fared far worse than I during the recent blockbuster The Ash Cloud That Ate Europe. For instance, I was stranded at home, rather than camped out mid-trip in some airport for a week! Additionally, as violent natural occurrences go, we were all quite lucky with this fatality-free episode! Nonetheless, I can still give a small disgruntled grunt with the current state of affairs.

Due to the HIVE effect[*], I missed out on the main purpose of my Japan trip -- the latest T2K collaboration meeting. Our experiment is turning on and ramping up right now; at our last meeting, back in January, we had no data events... and by the next meeting, in August, we should have our first publications. As such, this had promised to be a rather exciting meeting... so I am rather bummed to have missed it! On a more personal note, I had been planning to take a long weekend out of my month in Japan to pay a visit to Seoul; I have not yet been to South Korea and had rather been looking forward to it! With my trip now shorted by ten days, the South Korea plans have had to be postponed to another time.

I swear, it almost seems like our T2K collaboration meetings are cursed! Last year, our May meeting was cancelled at the very last minute[***] as a panic erupted when the first swine flu cases were discovered in Japan. This year, we have a volcano. Très Bizarre!

There. Kvetching finished. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled fun-filled Nomad! We apologise for the interruption in service but -- hey! -- what did you expect from a post entitled "The Bad"?? If I had not found something to gripe about, y'all would have figured you were not getting your money's worth, true?

On the plus side, the extra ten days in Merry Olde England have been a fantastic blend of productive and fun! So that adds a little extra "yay" to my day! I shall write about how I spent my volcano time in a separate post[**]... but first there is the final installment in my LJ Eastwood trilogy to complete: The Ugly!

Stay tuned, dear friends!!

[*] Which, I should note, is quite similar to a "PIN number" and an "ATM machine".

[**] Lest I violate the spirit of the title here by talking about fun stuff!

[***] Late enough that some people were already on intercontinental flights... and only learned of the change after landing in Japan! I was lucky, getting the message about nine hours before I was supposed to depart!
