...And While I'm At It

Like the previous post, this entry is for my Chicago area friends. Once upon a time, I thought I would be at the Event Horizon after Starwood, in the first week of August... making it easy to attend the Poly Karaoke on August 2^nd. But, as Robbie Burns likes to say, the best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agely. Know what I mean?

Since I'll be in Stanford in early August, my time at the Event Horizon has been shifted to before Starwood. So no first Thursday of the month for me. Not being one to let a little thing like timing stop me, I am planning to announce an unofficial Poly Karaoke on either the second or third Thursday of July. That's either July 12^th or 19^th. Both dates are equally good for me, so I was wondering if anyone who would be interested in coming along has a preference. If so, drop a comment and let me know which of the two Thursdays is better for you. Using the replies, I'll settle on the best date and announce it on the Poly Chicago list in a few days.

Looking forward to hitting ye olde Sidekicks again... and hope to see some of you there!

Heck, I'd be entirely happy to set up a day where we just do dinner somewhere-goodness knows just our households is easily enough for a gathering. :) We do want to see you, we miss you.

Well, I am totally keeping fingers crossed that you and your clan will be able to make it to the party... but dinner would be quite nice, too! The missing is mutual, trust me! *smile*

Are there any weeknights that would work for going out with you and your tribe while I'm in town? (i.e., between July 12 and 22)

I would suggest the 18th. Wednesdays are cool. We have a previous commitment for the day of your party, but we may look at wriggling out of it. Maybe we can meet up somewhere to meet all necessary dietary needs and hang out?

I keep missing the karaoke because of work, and other stuff. But considering I'm now living with raven_ap_morgan, and my job with Brice is over (unless you count Bristol Renaissance Faire), chances are now much higher that I'll be at Sidekicks.

You and Brice share some similar hobbies, I noticed. Things like skydiving and scuba diving. We thought we might bump into you at a con or something, but I guess you took off in your travels before I had a chance to introduce you.

Either month would work about as well, I suppose.

Yah, you had mentioned introducing us... but I've been in England for over a year now. Here the Ren Faire's are held in real medieval castles (see, for instance, my entry on Warwick Castle (http://anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com/147178.html?mode=reply). You would enjoy!

Anyway, come along to Sidekicks -- I'll announce the date on the PolyChi list soon -- and bring Brice with you! I can meet him then...

Stronghold was an actual castle, based on some designs in Germany and California-- the California ones were based on German, English, and French designs. The Strong family lived there, then donated the castle and land to the Presbyterian church, which uses it for confirmation outings, team building exercises, and renaissance faires.

I also mentioned to paul31415926536 that there's a castle in his hometown of Muskogee, OK. He'd never heard of it, but they put on a huge faire in May, a Halloween thing in October, a big feast in November, and a Christmas thing in December.

There's also some ren faire people building a castle in northern Illinois somewhere, the details were kinda through word of mouth, but they did imply future ren faires.

We also saw an ad in Renaissance magazine a few months ago, somebody on the East coast has the land and money and supplies, just needs help building a castle. Everyone who helps will get living space, a deed to their own apartment inside, and some title in the "kingdom". That sounds pretty cool!

Then there's Castle Loma in Toronto. Been there, had the tour. My friend marahsk was married there. X-Men was filmed there (Professor Xavier's mansion/ school), among other movies. I understand they have a VERY small ren faire there, but their big draw is the horseback riding through the gardens, and their wedding stuff.
