Yesterday's weather was indeed cooperative, so I had a lovely day out on my own, visiting Kanazawa. Most of my time was spent at Kenrokuen -- the seventeenth century gardens regarded by many as the most beautiful in Japan. I also popped across the road to Kanazawa Castle for a little bit.[*]

The weather today is again fantastic, so I am about to meet JI -- who was my student when we were both at Oxford -- and then drive up to Takayama, also known as "Little Kyoto of the Japanese Alps". As such, I have no time for a detailed post about Kanazawa right now. Thus, for the moment, I just leave you, gentle readers, with one of my favourite photographs from yesterday:

The pond is one of three at Kenrokuen, known as Kasumigaike. The island in the center is Horaijima, also called the "tortoise shelled island" because of its shape. It is meant to represent the legendary island of perpetual youth and longevity.

On that note, I must be off, lest I be late! Have a lovely day, dear friends! More later...

[*] The reason that the back entrance to the castle is right next to the gardens is simple: Kenrokuen used to be the castle garden before being opened to the public in 1874!
