Since my last update, I drove to Boston for [livejournal.com profile] cheshcat's mother's wake & funeral. We also cleaned out her house and I drove a 15' truck full of sentimental items (mostly heirloom furniture) back to Chicago. The whole ordeal was very strenuous and very stressful for all of us that were involved. That's the catching up part.

I am in England now -- Leeds specifically. I arrived yesterday and I will stay here for one week. There is a collaboration meeting that began today and, when it ends, there will be a conference on ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It is very good to be getting back to my role as a scientist.

This is only the second time that I have been in England. The first time -- in 1990 -- I really only stayed in the London area. I have to say, Leeds is a very quaint town. I like it. The meeting and conference are held at the University of Leeds, which is in the NorthWest corner of the city. The student dorms, where I am staying, are in the SouthEast corner. So I've been walking across the entire city each day. The walk can be done in about 45 minutes. Like I said, it is a quaint little town. Last night I went exploring on foot and I think I have the basic lay of the land pretty well by now. (As an added bonus, that excursion took place on a Saturday night so I got to wander through downtown as the weekend partying was beginning -- lots of cute English women in skimpy outfits!)

[livejournal.com profile] cheshcat would love it here. I've passed by several things that I know she would like to see -- such as the Royal Armories and the wall that used to be the Eastern border of the city in medieval times. There is a conference in her field held here each summer, so we should bring her sometime soon. Like maybe next year.

One minor annoyance: We have internet connection through the university. However, the firewall only allows http through -- no other protocol. So I cannot access machines via SSH and, therefore, cannot read my email. I could send email just fine from the lab's IMAP server, but I could not get a reply (thanks to my forwarding). So if anyone needs to reach me this week, replying to my journal might be the best way to do it. Hurm. Hopefully this problem will be fixed, because there are many of us here that are less than pleased with such limited access.
