As EB and I were walking home from dinner in Summertown tonight, a parked car caught my eye. It was a VW Passat... with Virginia license plates. Guess somebody followed these directions.
Every Google Maps set of directions, from anywhere in the US to anywhere in Europe, uses that Boston-to-Le-Havre routing. The first time I saw it mentioned, it was something to do with directions from Dallas, TX to Uppsala, Sweden. Even using New York City as a departure point still routes you through Boston. (There is no equivalent for destinations across the Pacific; it simply says "We could not calculate driving directions...")
When I was desperately trying to figure out a way to get to Australia, I used to threaten to swim there. I figured my biggest problem would be trying to swim through the Panama Canal ;-)
Well, if the Panama Canal was going to give you trouble, you could have simply done like they did in the old days... and gone around South America, instead!
You know... I'm looking forward to meeting you when I'm in Chicago next month... but I suspect that I am going to be involuntarily surprised when you don't look like a big happy polar bear.
Unless, of course, I am making an incorrect assumption... and you do look like a big happy polar bear!
Oh, damn -- you really are far away, aren't you? I just checked your locale on your profile page. Since we know so many folks in common, I had figured you were fairly local. Ooops -- my mistake!
I'd still like to actually meet you in person, but I'll totally understand if you can't manage the commute.

That's because the Pacific Ocean is too large to swim across. Everyone knows that! ;-)
