*grin* That's quite okay! I try to tailor my explanations to the level of the person that I am talking to, giving the right level of detail so that they can understand.
Knowing that feanelwa has a physics doctorate -- albeit in a different part of the field -- I was able to speak directly and avoid metaphor. I didn't directly invoke any mathematics, but I came damn close in mentioning unitary transformation matrices. You can see the result: Effective communication that quickly cleared up the imperfections in my explanation-by-analogy. Whereas, to those not well versed in quantum mechanics (i.e., most of the human race), I find those imperfections a small price to pay for communicating a very alien concept.
