Nine might end up being the winner. We shall see. There have been a handful of ten-letter words submitted, but I need to check them out with the OED tomorrow after I've given people enough time to respond.
Personally, I have thought of no ten letter words, a couple of dodgy nine letter words (like "scritched") that might not pass the OED test, and plenty of eight letter words (like "thoughts" and "droughts", to name just a couple). I can't compete for the points -- that wouldn't be fair! -- but I'm having fun playing along, too!
