Today is sixteen years since I first met
cheshcat. Monday September 6th 1993, the first day of my second year as an undergraduate. I still remember the first time we saw each other. I was coming out of the bathroom on my dormitory hall at Hampshire College and she was walking into the hall to come fetch me for
yavin7, who was waiting in his car outside.
First impressions hardly indicated that we would become life partners. For one thing,
cheshcat was dating
yavin7 at the time. For another, she and I did not like each other. Not the sort of dislike that really masks sexual tension; we honestly did not like each other. She thought that I was an obnoxious spoiled eighteen year old brat and I thought that she was loud and annoying. It didn't help that the encounter ended with her throwing me out of her house for getting a phone call there, either.
There would be one more encounter -- also negative -- before we ended up, largely by chance, in a relationship about eleven months later.
In entirely unrelated news, I rang a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples at St. Giles Church this evening! I am very excited by this -- especially because I was quite nervous! Summer travel and events conspired to keep me away from bell ropes for quite some time -- I had not rung at all since early July, over two months ago! Jumping into a quarter peal -- forty-five minutes of non-stop ringing -- whilst being very much out of practice was not something that I felt confident about. Still, it was a success!
Indeed, this is only the third quarter peal that I have ever rung! The first was last year, on a covering tenor. That is the easiest possible position to ring, as you only ever stay in last place and ring after all the other bells. At the time, it was a challenge and an accomplishment for me... but, really, it is quite simple. Back in February, I rang my first quarter peal of Grandsire Triples on the treble. This is the second simplest thing to do, as the treble only hunts from first place to last (i.e., seventh) and back again. Rinse and repeat. Still, hunting does require a bit of skill and I was very pleased when I pulled it off for the first time in February. Seven months between successful quarter peals may seem like a lot -- and it is -- but I had been in no attempted between now and then. Blame the Scheduling Gods. Thus, looking at it another way, I had no failed attempts between my two successful QPs. That makes me rather pleased, especially when I came into last night's attempt so very rusty!
I am very much looking forward to making more progress with my ringing -- on both tower bells and handbells -- when I return from a month of travels in Japan and the States in late October.
