Yesterday afternoon,
resourceress and I went to the Forest Home Cemetery to visit some dead Anarchists. Quoth Resourceress, after looking online for information about the cemetery: EVERYONE is buried there! We knew that the five Haymarket Martyrs were buried there (with a special monument), as was Emma Goldman. And it is no surprise that Lucy Parsons is there, too, since her husband Albert was one of the Martyrs. However, we were surprised to learn that Big Bill Haywood and Voltairine de Cleyre and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn were also in the cemetery.
It has been warm lately, so I didn't bring a heavy coat. My mistake. However, braving the cold was well worth it to see the monument that had been erected to these famous Anarchists. We took pictures and walked around looking for other noteworthy graves. We found everyone that we were looking for except Haywood and Gurley Flynn.
After we were done, we headed into Chicago to the New World Resource Center. In January, the Resourceress had brought me to the Lucy Parsons Center in Boston, so this was my way of returning the favour. We browsed the books and zines and posters for some time, eventually settling on a few small purchases. Then we set out for the Heartland Cafe for our dinner and the evening's entertainment.
Our choice for dinner at the cafe was vegetarian chili, which was quite good. However, I was saddened by all of the buffalo meat products on the menu. Buffalo are the cute beasts that I drive by at the lab, not slabs of dead meat on my plate. So I doubt I will go back there often. Anyway, we weren't there for the food as much as the performance. While eating, Mackel and Rocky -- two more Anarchists from the West Suburbs -- arrived. We invited them to our table, since we had a very clear view of the stage.
The performance was excellent. The first set was poetry and music by Attila the Stockbroker. I had neither seen nor heard of him before, but I like his stuff. At the break between sets, Resourceress bought two of his albums. Then David Rovics came on for the second set. Lots of fun, though some of the songs also evoked lots of tears from Resourceress and I. Especially Hiroshima. He played for about an hour and twenty minutes, including three encores. We kept cheering, hoping for a fourth. Ah well.
Anyway, after the concert, we headed home (dropping Mackel off along the way). I was feeling quite worn out by the time we got in at nearly 1am, so we headed off to the bedroom to call it a night.
