Given that I call myself Nomad, it seems fitting that I write my first Live Journal entry, not from home, but during a stay in Mexico City. As of today, it has been 130 days since I moved to Chicago, and I have been away for 50 of those days. Can't tell if that's a lot or a little, given my previous habit of spending six months a year in Japan -- usually in three month stints.

Anyway, I'm spending this week and most of next in Mexico City to work with the Auger Offline Software development group. Which is interesting, since I've never been a software guy. Well, I said that I wanted to use my time as a post-doc to round out the skills that I didn't get a chance to acquire as a graduate student, so I guess I'm in the right place for that.

Actually, this is my first time in Mexico as something other than a tourist in the usual places: Cancun and Cozumel. It's an interesting experience, coming to the most populated city in the world (estimated 20 million people). Haven't done much sightseeing yet, but we're going downtown for dinner in about twenty minutes, and this weekend we are going on a road trip to visit pyramids.

I suppose that I should say some of the typical things I've noticed in the initial posts of other people's live journals. Mainly, something about my intention in writing the journal itself. Who am I to break with tradition, so here goes:

(1) I'm writing this for me more than anyone else. So posting may be frequent or it may be sporadic. We'll see.

(2) As a general rule, people who write LiveJournals seem to be prone to taking all sorts of online quizzes, like "What letter of the alphabet are you?" By and large, I find such things to be arbitrary and intend to avoid them except under special circumstances.

(3) I have, on occassion, LiveJournal surfed at times when bored at work. I know I've stumbled onto the LiveJournals of people I know who don't know I'm reading them and probably wouldn't want me to know some of the things that they have posted. I have no intention of doing the same thing. Anything that goes on the public LJ page will be fit for consumption by anyone, anywhere. More personal stuff may go on the "friends only" page, but it may just get send -- via email -- directly to the friends that I want to tell it to.

There, I do believe I have discharged my duties in that regard!
(And y'all can bring my words back for me to eat in the unlikely event that I ever become a quizilla junkie... *smile*)

Okay, dinner downtown is looming large, so it's time to sign-off.
