[Let's Play "Name That Entry!" (Rules Below)]

This entry will contain three entirely disparate topics. Two hundred points for the person who can think of the funniest title that unites all three.

Topic the first!

Saturday is the Great Game Gathering at the Flat With No Name. In honour of the awesomelicious [livejournal.com profile] tawneypup, who made the set of Betrayal at House on the Hill[1] that will be one of the games played, Saturday's party will henceforth be known as the Hayford Amy Merry Day![2]

It sounds like there will be a nice crowd coming -- excellent! For those who will be in attendance, please to be arriving at two o'clock[3]... or as soon afterward as you can manage. As soon as we have enough people -- about four or five needed -- the first game will begin! Other games can be assembled as other people arrive and as games end.

Anyone coming who has not yet been to the Flat With No Name, you can find ridiculously detailed instructions here[4]. In particular, you want to see the sections marked Getting to us and Contact numbers. The gate is no longer broken, so call up when you arrive and somebody can let you in.

Topic the second!

My journal serves two purposes: It is an actual journal for me to record and remember events by, and it provides a tool for keeping in touch with a large number of friends -- [almost] all of whom I have met in real life -- spread out over a wide geographic area.

The latter purpose has be concerned over the mass exodus from LiveJournal to DreamWidth. In particular, I notice a quick transition from my friends on the Eastern side of the pond -- many of whom had DW accounts before the open beta even began. On the Western side of the Atlantic, I can see some of my friends migrating... but it is a much slower pace and far fewer people. Indeed, when I recently asked [livejournal.com profile] tawneypup if her people were moving over as rapidly as my UK friends were, her response was a very telling: "What's 'DreamWidth'?"

Personally, I have never had a bone to pick with LiveJournal and am quite happy here. I have avoided many of the social sites out there except LJ thus far. I do not have an account on MySpace or Facebook or InsaneJournal or DeadJournal or GreatestJournal or Twitter or whatever else. I would not say that I have a tremendous loyalty to LJ, but I was here first and I have had no complaints in the five years and change that I have been here. Meanwhile, I barely have enough time to read my f-page on LJ and keep up with my personal and professional e-mail -- let alone mailing list e-mail, which usually leaves my InBox unread these days! I don't have time to dabble in a plethora of blogging and social networking sites. Furthermore, I can do more on LJ than anywhere else, as I have a permanent account here.

On the other hand, if there is a huge exodus from LJ, then it won't do me all that much good as a way to keep up with my friends when we are not in the same country, continent, hemisphere, whatever. So I do now have a DreamWidth account[5] -- courtesy of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug -- and am trying to figure out what to do with it. That's where y'all come in. And what better way to figure such things out than -- you guessed it! -- a poll!

[Poll #1396394]

In this case, dear friends, my plans will be influenced by yours. So choose carefully -- my future is in your hands!

Topic the third!

At our weekly meeting this afternoon, my boss called me shallow. Just came right out and said it to me across the table: "You're shallow."

How do you respond to that?? Without missing a beat, I snidely replied: "Thank you." Meanwhilst, I had not the foggiest idea of what he was talking about.

He then went on to explain that he was talking about Super-Kamiokande, the water Cherenkov detector in Japan that I did my doctoral work on. My boss used to be on a competing water Cherenkov experiment, called SNO and located in Canada, that was located at a much deeper underground site.[6]

I really do like working in this research group. Overall, we have a great synergy! A few days ago, my boss came into our office and made us all stop working to show us a humourous YouTube clip interviewing people about whether the Large Hadron Collider will end the world. Tomorrow, he will be in late because he has been officially invited to an early screening of Angels & Demons and will be giving a talk about particle physics to the audience afterward. Fun times!

[1] Henceforth known as The Shinnin' to avoid being sued!

[2] Otherwise known as the "HAM Day."

[3] In the afternoon. I may be occupied with things that are not board games at two o'clock Saturday morning!

[4] I believe that the charming [livejournal.com profile] prolificdiarist can vouch for the level of detail in these directions... and the resulting ease in finding us.

[5] Same name as my LJ account. Find me there if you like.

[6] One of the strengths of our group at Imperial College is that four out of the five senior people have experience on other major neutrino experiments: Super-Kamiokande (me), SNO (my boss), KamLAND, and Mini-BooNE. If we had people from MINOS and K2K in our group, we would really have all the bases covered.

The Hadron Collider didn't end the world? (insert big sigh here)
Where is an earth-killing asteroid when you really need one?

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not yet... though, to be fair, it crashed from a magnet quench before it ever started making collisions. Just circulating beam was never going to end the world.

What we really need is a capitalist-killing asteroid. Maybe we can find one and convince it to hit the Earth?

[identity profile] winewiskeywomen.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
if we find a capitalist-killing asteroid, let's name it Lehman.

Ditto on "What's 'DreamWidth". I have not hear of it before your blog. You should of had another poll option like "I need to check out DreamWidth and get back to you".

for now I staying with LJ because of the friend and the groups.

Dreamwidth is an LJ fork in that it's based on the LJ code, but it has a lot of improvements (http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/wiki/index.php?title=Dreamwidth_changes_from_LJ), like separating the friends list into access list (people you want to read your locked posts) and subscription list (people whose posts you want to read). Plus it is ad-free. It's run by two ex-LJ employees, so they know the code well and know what they want to change. Its mission statement is much more user-friendly than LJ's, in that they say they will treat users as people and not as a commodity.

The website is http://dreamwidth.org/ and a number of people have written journal entries explaining why they're moving to Dreamwidth (http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Why_Dreamwidth).

The Day Of Games Of Internet Journals With Underground Particle Physicists.

P.S. - I've given you access to my Dreamwidth account, and "subscribed" to yours. The username is the same as on LJ.

I intend to wait and see if Dreamwidth stops failing when I try to comment on people's entries with OpenID, or if the crossposting feature turns out to be a password-stealing scam, and when it all turns out to be good, I will get a Dreamwidth account.

Hmmm I hadn't thought that far ahead in my LJ plans though I have been aware of people migrating because of the changes at LJ. But I've been happy here so far and have no complaints so far. I may stay unless there is a mass exodus. Myspazz has tumbleweeds rolling around there since the Facebook mass migration this winter so I mainly use this and Facebook as my means of keeping in contact with my own far-flung friends.

I'm not feeling particularly clever and funny today so I won't embarrass myself trying to do the contest. But I love that you do things like this.

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. LJ hasn't done anything to alienate me yet, so I don't see much reason to move. I may if everyone else does, because then there's no point to being here. Hoping it doesn't come to that, though, given that I have all the flexibility of a permanent account here and have squat over on DW (or anywhere else).

I won't embarrass myself trying to do the contest. But I love that you do things like this.

*grin* Thanks! Am having trouble choosing a winner, though, so I may ask for help. Valuable points are at stake! Don't want to choose unwisely! ;-)

I have a DW account and will probably mostly post there and cross-post to Lj from there - as I can't see how to post on Lj and cross-post it to DW. I intend to read both and as I routinely skip many things on my friends' page without feeling too guilty I am not too unhappy when I see things posted in both places. I will comment on posts where I read them and reply to comments where they are posted.

[identity profile] cjtremlett.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't have the choice I would have selected! I don't currently have a DW account, though I do at least intend to get one. I will keep the LJ as my main account until it stops being useful. I do have a facebook, annoying as it is (and I -really- don't like facebook), because some people I know aren't on LJ. Silly people. I won't get a myspace 'cause it's just too damn ugly. Feh.

I may use a DW account for other stuff, but I'm bad enough about updating LJ sporadically. So who knows? LJ will be my primary account for quite a while, I'm sure.

You didn't have the choice I would have selected!

Mea culpa! [livejournal.com profile] xirpha had the same complaint up above! I guess it goes to prove that the old adage is true: "You can please some of the people all of the time..."

Baby don't leave me! It's a horror story, but not the end of the world...

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* Nicely done!

Also, am very psyched for another round of horror tomorrow!

[identity profile] salexa.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now I don't see a reason for a Dreamwidth account, but that may change as things shake out and people move back and forth.

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree with you. I got the account, just to stake a place, but am not doing anything with it right now...

[identity profile] dcseain.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Many, many of my North American friends are moving to Dreamwidth, or at least opening accounts there as we determine what to do with them.

Your poll rocks! Thank you for making me laugh when am ill! :D

I don't know what I'll be using my DW account for yet.

Oh, oh, oh, I'm in a footnote too! I just saw. Yay! And yes, they are the awesomest directions *EVER*.

Tum ti tum.

Kx

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You are quite welcome! Everyone knows that people need extra laughs when they are ill!

(can tickle you if you aren't getting your full laugh quota met! *wink*)

Hope you feel better soon, sweetie!

Contest entry -- "You call me shallow because you're jealous you haven't the dreamwidth to be part of my game at the Flat with No Name"

Yes, I know it's long, but my brain is fuzzy at 1:30 am, having been up since 7 am.

I got a DreamWidth account mainly to reserve my usual username and because a fair few HP fandom folk are wandering that way. I plan on keeping my LJ accounts active for the foreseeable future. Not sure what I'll be doing with the DW one at present, but the entries are likely to be different from other online journals -- the only one that is somewhat of a mirror is my ficLJ [livejournal.com profile] theentwyfe, since the original IJ version is subject to comment rot. :P

I'm not on Facebook at all, since it's tied to real-world name and relationships. I have that in a professional context with LinkedIn and that is enough RL info to have out there for me. (Are you on LinkedIn? If so, please let me know if you'd like to link networks.) All other social networks are under my nom-du-net, for privacy reasons.

PS -- I prefer cheese and Branston pickle, personally, but that's not easy to find by me. :-/

Hey hey! Check it out! (http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=1396845&mode=results) It looks like you may be winning those two hundred points for the funniest entry title! *grin*

Nicely done, my dear!

(Also, I have a jar of Branston pickle in the fridge right now. You're welcome to stop on by for some anytime, you know!)

[identity profile] theentwife.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
How odd . . . didn't think anyone else would think it funny.

In other news, while removing stuff from the car trunk, I discovered an errant jar of Branston pickle that had escaped its plastic prison from the last time, a few weeks back, that I'd been able to acquire some at a certain grocery store that carries a fair few British groceries. The escapee was accompanied by a bottle of malt vinegar and both were immediately taken into custody and remanded to death row in my kitchen, being as their life expectancy now is quite short . . .
