Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish

The second half of the Reagan & Thatcher double act has kicked the bucket! About bloody time, too!

Back in 2006, I spent my first Mayday in the UK at an Anarchist event in London. During the long weekend, somebody handed me a card with an invitation to a party on the Saturday after she finally buys the farm. That was nearly seven years ago. Wonder if the party's still going forward...

ETA: This poem sums thing up beautifully!

If that group doesn't throw a party, it's certain someone else will! Many someones, I suspect.

You might also appreciate this post on her kicking the bucket.

Yes, very well said. Thanks for sharing that.

As right as it feels that she finally is off this Earth, I said something very similar earlier. She was a horrid person, and the damage she inflicted on this country will take decades to recover from. She paved the way for Cameron's current "Big Society" which has tripled tuition, shredded the social safety net, and is in the process of privatising the NHS. But all that damage is already done, and her death will not undo it. There are very real battles in the here-and-now that matter as much today as resistance to Thatcher's evil did then.

Meanwhile, I am half considering applying for permanent residency in Australia. I understand you can get it before even arriving.

You're welcome.

Also, this. :)

I'm pretty sure there's already a lot of Tory-like priviatsation and other corporate scheming happening in Australia, alas. Besides, it seems to either catch fire or knock buildings down quite a lot, which doesn't seem too safe.

Speaking of Australia, though, here's a novel I think you'd enjoy reading. The PDF's free, and ePub and dead tree versions are reasonably priced.

George Square in Glasgow it's already happening from the Glasgow Anarchists! Officially 17:00 - unofficially now

Huzzah! Let the festivities commence! ;-D

I cannot imagine there being any in Cambridge!

Really? Wow -- I didn't know that! Is Cambridge really that conservative? Hurm.

We have a small splodge of yellow in one area - *everything* else is blue!

Erk! So sorry to hear it, hon! *hugs*

Heh - there's a few os us dodgy hippy types around!

And very glad of it, too!

BTW I have posted most of my thoughts to FB about it

Spiffy... but, not being on Facebook, I'm afraid I'll be missing them. I know, I know. Who isn't on Facebook these days? Even so, I'm one of the six or seven people left in the developed world who hasn't joined the ranks of the Zuckerberg Empire...

I will be doing a summary of it on LJ, but it is so quiet here these days that for stuff like this I like the immediacy of FB

[identity profile] anarchist-nomad.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I miss the old days when LJ was a hub of activity.

Still, I'll look forward to your summary whenever you have a chance to re-post it here!

I am NOT of FB! I will NEVER get on FB! Does that make us eight?

My goodness! I think it does! ;-D

Well done, you! I liked you loads before... but even better now! We can be the Facebookless together! *grin*

Huzzah! I like you lots too.

I know I've already told you that I am not now, and never will be, associated with Facebook in any way at all. And I don't think there's very much risk of my using Twitter, either. (Birds twitter. I am not a birdbrain!)

[identity profile] selki.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I would show up for the party just to see if anyone else did!

Excellent article! Thanks for sharing!

As the whitewashing machines kick into full gear (as they did during the beatification of St. Ronald, nine years ago), it is good to know that same places can still see the past clearly. This country has still not recovered from the damage that she inflicted.

It is also interesting to look at what is being said outside of the UK and US press. For example, take a look at this article (http://www.santiagotimes.cl/world/chile-abroad/25980-margaret-thatcher-staunch-pinochet-supporter-and-friend-dies) in the Santiago Times. The Anglo-American sphere may be well on its way to canonization... but there are others who remember well how chummed she was with dictators. Not just Pinochet, though that is clearly what Chileans will remember most. She and Pol Pot got on well, too.

It doesn't fix the damage she did, but I'm still glad she's dead.

I'd sing a round of Jim's Big Ego's "New Lang Syne" (Thank God It's Over), except it's not over, as you say.
