If Punxsutawney Phil, or any of the other locally iconic woodchucks, have the brains the Goddess promised a gopher, they won't even come out of their burrows today. Most of the area is being hammered by sleet, ice, freezing rain, snow, and just about every other kind of wintry unpleasantness there is. (I'm so close to the ocean that it occasionally winds up in my yard, so the temperature is already above freezing here, and we'll probably just get rain. But even a couple of kilometers inland, it'll be frozen or freezing all day.)
My late former High Priest, Fred, used to refer to Imbolc as the Slush Festival. He was right...
My understanding is that P. Phil (a) lives in a man-made, heated burrow in comfort, and (b) is hauled out by the celebrants whether he wants to come out or not. So he might not have much choice about using the brains the Goddess promised a woodchuck. Phil is not a gopher.
I know it's all a carefully staged media event. Punxsutawney Phil, Charles G. Hogg (the Staten Island Zoo), etc., are all quite domesticated. But if I were a burrowing rodent, and there were several inches of ice on the ground, I'd stay in my burrow and the hell with everybody ;-)
Yes, I have heard tale of the intense Winter weather pounding a goodly portion of the States! You, my dear Ace, must be in a sort of heaven! I know how you like the cold and frigid weathers...
I enjoyed the cold weather, and being able to put the thickest comforter on the bed. And the snowstorms were very pretty to watch. When there's a winter storm outside, I love to bake - it keeps the kitchen warm and fills the house with delicious smells. Ice storms aren't very much fun, unless they leave the trees encased in a glassy coat of ice that sparkles in the sun... but that's bad for the trees (not to mention having a similar glassy coat of ice on the road surfaces!). They're predicting some more "mixed precipitation" (mainly rain this time) for Saturday.
And Imbolc and Groundhog Day are over - Gung Hey Fat Choy!
