Day 72: Random Bits of Randomness

In lieu of an actual entry, have an assorted grab bag of PSA, observational trivia, and crypticness! Enjoy!
  • Random the First: I am currently without mobile phone. I expect that the situation will be resolved by the end of the week but, for now, if you need to reach me please use other media. Like LiveJournal, for instance! (Or e-mail... or smoke signals...)

  • Random the Second: Went out dancing with the charming [livejournal.com profile] miss_amaranth last week. It occurred to me that several of the songs we danced to came out when I was in high school... and she had not yet been born! That was amusing -- nostalgia for me, retro for her!

  • Random the Third: Attempting not one, but two difficult things today... neither with an enormous chance of success. Wish me luck, dear friends! Although I do not expect either to work out, one never knows unless one tries... and I have been known in the past to accomplish the impossible by simply giving it my best shot. We shall see! The results of one of these endeavors will be known by the end of the evening; the other will take some time.
On that note, gentle readers, we now return you to your regularly scheduled Monday!

The word nomad came up in a crossword I did yesterday and I thought of you. Good luck with whatever it is you're doing!

The spirit of the Nomad moves in mys-TEEEEEER-ious ways! ;-D

That's awesome -- thanks for sharing... and for the luck!

As a total non-sequitor, do you happen to know when KamiokaNDE was shut down for good? I was trying to demonstrate the other day how we can compute a lower-limit on the lifetime of the proton, and I couldn't find how long KamiokaNDE ran for. The Kamioka Observatory web-site doesn't have a lot of information on past experiments, and it doesn't have information on the total runtime of KamiokaNDE.

(FYI, I computed 10^34/6 years for KamiokaNDE, and 10^35/6 years for Super-K for a 95% confidence level. The Super-K should be higher because I simplified my math by assuming 30k tonnes of water, not 50k tonnes.)

As you can see, my friend, I started to reply here... then elevated my response to half of an entry all its own. Congratulations -- you have made the front page! :-D

Take a look and let me know what you think...

Argue for your limitations, and they are yours. You do the right thing to attempt the impossible. Good luck to you! :)

Well said, my friend! Well said, indeed! I may have to steal this quote from you... *grin*

As you know now, the first of the two impossible things did not bear fruit. Never mind; there shall be other opportunities to try again and I shall eventually succeed. The second impossible thing? Too soon to tell. Keeping fingers crossed.

Twas lovely to see you last night, to chat, and to game! Let's do it again soon, yes?

[identity profile] wolfpeach.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed :)

btw, it was a Richard Bach quote, from Illusions, I think... I wish I had said it!

Fair enough... and no problem -- I will steal from him as readily as I would from you! ;-D

"The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a bit longer." (Paraphrase of some WW II-era engineering project team's motto.)

Heh, I like it!

P.S. Nice icon! *wink*

Ah - I got it slightly wrong; the original is "The difficult we do at once; the impossible takes a little longer." (Often, a third clause is appended: "Miracles by appointment only.") It's from the "Seabees", the US Navy's Construction Battalions (CBs), and it does date back to WW II. There's currently a detachment of Seabees in Haiti, helping with the rebuilding.

Glad you like the icon ;-)

*grin* As Teh Pupdetz would say, "As long as your round hamster ball (of LIFE!) keeps rolling", baby.

*snicker*

*shakes head and smiles* I love you, Sweetheart. Despite the fact that, of nearly seven billion people on this planet, you and I are the only ones who actually understand that quote...
